Enterprising Latinas, Inc.'s mission is to create pathways of opportunity for Latinas in Tampa Bay by teaching new skills, creating networks of mutual support, and advocating for innovative solutions to promote economic mobility and equity. Founded in 2009 and in operations since 2014, ELI is a highly recognized advocate of solutions to address inequities in women's wages and wealth, particularly among Latinas given the wide wage and wealth gaps they experience in the U.S. ELI's strategy is twofold: to support individual low to moderate-income women regardless of race or ethnicity on their path to economic prosperity, as well as to turn community challenges into economic opportunities.
Because we know the place we live determines our access to opportunities, ELI decided to focus its work in Wimauma and the SouthShore region of Hillsborough County, Florida in response to needs identified by the Wimauma community and its women in 2014 (jobs, childcare, transportation, education). ELI serves an average of 2,000 members per year with personalized mentoring and coaching for personal development, information and referrals to community resources, workforce and entrepreneurship trainings, job coaching and employment supports, and technical assistance to entrepreneurs to launch and expand their businesses. We have also created several community assets to promote economic opportunity. Besides the launch of the Wimauma Opportunity Center in 2018 which holds activities that touch over 2,000 people per year, ELI has developed the Wimauma Connects free community Wi-Fi network since 2019 to bridge the digital divide for over 550 families and businesses in the Wimauma Village. In addition, ELI co-created the Wimauma NOW! campaign advocating for updates to the neighborhood plan and public investments which was adopted by the County's Board of County Commissioners. ELI has increasingly lifted the needs of low-income women in our region and enabled access to new public and private resources for residents.
